RSD 2012: Outing no. 1

7" singles (from left): Brendan Benson, The Hives, Joey Ramone
Well, I didn't score too big on my first outing for Record Store Day 2012. The only item towards the top of my list that I found was Joey Ramone's new 7", on groovy red vinyl. McCartney's 7" reissue of "Another Day", The Knack's 10' live EP, and the Empire Records soundtrack are all still out there somewheres. And I shall hunt them down and drag them home. They will be mine.

Happy RECORD STORE DAY!

Hope you all have a chance to get out and support your independent record stores today!  Without the indies, in my opinion, life would hardly be worth living. So go buy yourself a little happy and keep the dream alive. Long live vinyl!

Official lyric video for "Calling Alameda" by WORDS. I wrote as well as sing & play bass on the track.

WORDS dedicated the track to Davy Jones, since the original inspiration for the song came from Jones' line in "Zilch" from The Monkees' 1967 album Headquarters. "Calling Alameda" was completed and partially recorded at the time of Davy's death earlier this year, which is why it felt important to dedicate it to him.  The Monkees have been a pivotal influence on WORDS' music since the band's inception back in 1986.

The digital single's official release is tomorrow, 4/17/2012, at wordsmpls.bandcamp.com.

Reflections on WORDS: GTBC 25

25th Anniversary EP, released today at bandcamp.com
26 years ago a guy named Matt and I began writing songs in my parents' attic. We were both still in our teens, barely out of high school. The two of us had met several years prior at N.E. Junior High School in our hometown of Northeast Minneapolis. Our first "collaboration", in our senior year, was a mix tape to be played at what I think was our senior prom. What stands out for me from that event is discovering our mutual love of 60's music. I particularly remember listening to The Monkees' "She Hangs Out" and the excitement I felt knowing that someone (besides my bestie Kim and myself) dug this music.
